Yesterday was Day #2 of the Fuego y Agua 100k course mapping on Isla de
Ometepe. We are on a 3 day agenda to map and photograph the entire
course
Day #1
Peter, Carlos (the IBESA tour services owner) and I mapped all of the
ridable sections of the course on crossover motorcycles. The weather
was perfect and we made great time. The white sand beach sections are
absolutely gorgeous, what a relief for the runners after coming off of
Volcan Concepcion! We went through some very gnarly rocky sections,
narrow dirt road, white sand beach and narrow trail. Riding a
motorcycle through a thick herd of cattle is quite difficult, but it
seems to be commonplace on the island. What a peaceful place, people
are so friendly and so happy with the ultramarathon.
Day #2
We climbed Volcan Concepcion, the fire volcano. I had not been to the
1610 meter summit at the crater until today, when I was here in
December it was too cloudy to go above 1000 meters. What an amazing
view, I have never seen anything so amazing as that crater before.
The race course will only take the runners to 1000 meters, this is
still in the vegetation and a very stable trail. Above 1000 meters
the trail disappears and the climb is very difficult and not plausible as part of the race course.
Taking a break from mapping today to speak with the island authorities
about the event. We also plan on visiting with a local woodworker
about carving plaques for the winners.
We might go throw-net fishing on the lake as well, there are some very
large fish in the lake and I hope to make some of them into dinner.
